Understanding Creative Transfer and Navigating Career Transitions After the Arts

For many performing artists, our careers begin with passion and performance—but they don’t always end there. Whether by choice, necessity, or evolution, transitioning out of a full-time artistic role can feel like stepping into the unknown. But here’s the truth: your creativity doesn’t retire—it reinvents.
In this crossover podcast blog episode of Harbour for the Arts, I explore the concept of creative transfer—how the skills, instincts, and emotional intelligence we develop on stage can fuel success in new arenas.
What Is Creative Transfer?
Creative transfer is the process of applying artistic skills to non-artistic roles. It’s not about abandoning your identity—it’s about expanding it. From stage presence to strategic thinking, artists bring a unique lens to leadership, education, entrepreneurship, and advocacy. The key is learning to translate those gifts into a new language. Trust me, I have had to do it a lot. It is a skill that will serve you well when the phones stop ringing and that opera company you worked for decides to hire another soprano...or mezzo...or tenor...or bass.
My Journey: From Mezzo to Mentor
I shared my own story of shifting from full-time performance to producing, teaching, and leading. It wasn’t easy—but it was empowering. The reality was that I was worried about not being close to my parents when they started getting older. I also thought it was time for me to settle down and try to find a husband. They don't talk about these things when you are a student in college, at least back then they didn't.
I realized that my ability to read a room, tell a story, and connect emotionally made me a natural educator and advocate. My pitch decks became performances. My podcast became a stage. My students became my audience. As an educator, I went on to win New Teacher of the Year, Outstanding Teacher of the Year, and Teacher of the Year...all because I wanted to share my passion for the arts.
