5 Lessons I Learned from Dance Moms During International Dance Month

Like most celebrations, instead of a day, I like to celebrate the entire month. This also goes for International Dance Day, which was on April 29, 2023. I decided to celebrate the entire month by watching an old favorite with my daughter, Dance Moms. The first time my daughter watched Dance Moms was during the pandemic. What surprised me was how my daughter related to so much of what the girls went through and shared with me. From advocating for yourself, supporting your team, dealing with pressure, and how to overcome adversity. As International Dance Month comes to a close, I reflect on the valuable takeaways I've learned from one of the most talked-about dance shows of all time, Dance Moms. While the show has its controversies, there are valuable lessons that can be taken from the show and applied to our own lives.

Dedication and hard work pay off

One of the biggest takeaways from Dance Moms is the value of hard work and dedication. The dancers on the show work tirelessly to perfect their craft, and the results speak for themselves. Whether it's in dance or any other area of life, putting in the effort and staying committed to your goals can lead to great success.

Teamwork is key

Dance Moms also highlights the importance of teamwork. The dancers on the show are part of a team, and they work together to achieve their goals. It's a reminder that we can accomplish more when we work together and support each other.

Perseverance in the face of adversity

Dance Moms also teaches us the importance of perseverance. The dancers face challenges and setbacks, but they don't give up. They continue to push themselves and overcome obstacles, inspiring us to do the same in our own lives.

Embrace constructive criticism

One of the unique aspects of Dance Moms is the emphasis on critique. The dancers receive feedback on their performances, and while it can be tough to hear, it ultimately helps them improve. Learning to accept and embrace constructive criticism can help us grow and improve in all areas of our lives.

The importance of passion

Dance Moms reminds us of the importance of passion. The dancers on the show are passionate about their craft, and it shows in their performances. When we find something we're passionate about, we're more likely to put in the effort and stay dedicated to our goals.

While Dance Moms may have its controversies, there are valuable lessons that can be taken from the show. Dedication, teamwork, perseverance, embracing critique, and passion are all important qualities that can help us achieve success in dance and in life.

As International Dance Month comes to a close, let's take these lessons and apply them to our own lives. Let's continue to embrace the art of dance and all that it has to offer.
